Gehrlicher Solar signs a cooperation agreement with Federico Santa María Technical University to promote photovoltaic solar power in Chile

The Energy Innovation Centre at the University and the German multinational corporation have agreed...

The Energy Innovation Centre at the University and the German multinational corporation have agreed to work in the areas of innovation, development and training in renewable energy generation systems -such as photovoltaic solar energy, energy efficiency, process optimization and automatic systems.

Valparaiso, Chile. The signing of this document relates to an important cooperation agreement between Federico Santa María Technical University (USM) through its Energy Innovation Centre (CIE) and Gehrlicher Solar, which is very interested in cooperating in Chile to implement energy technology, and especially photovoltaic solar energy, throughout the production of local goods and services and in developing spaces for innovation.
The signing ceremony was held yesterday at 12.00 (Chilean time) in the Central House at Valparaiso campus. The ceremony was led by USM Chancellor José Rodríguez and by Gehrlicher Solar España CEO Francisco Espín Sánchez.
In this context, both institutions agree to design, implement and assess a Work Plan establishing the joint cooperation actions among the parties within the areas of innovation, development, training in renewable energy generation systems, energy efficiency, process optimization and automatic systems, among others. Within this framework, Gehrlicher Solar is interested in cooperating to launch innovative R&D actions to transfer their results into the industry.
The Director of the Energy Innovation Centre, Jaime Espinoza, stated: "For CIE this agreement involves its need for a strategic association with Research Centres and international companies to establish links for joint research, development and projects using the European experience in renewable energy, especially in solar energy." Gehrlicher is focused in developing photovoltaic energy. Its investment costs have dropped remarkably becoming increasingly competitive as compared to other non-conventional energy sources and even more competitive as regards conventional fossil energy sources. But there are specific issues of high relevance, at least for Chile, such as useful life and behaviour of photovoltaic modules at great heights, with high irradiance, huge daily ambient temperature variations and wind-driven particles and pollution (close to mining areas). There are areas to be researched and this agreement will boost them."
For his part, Gehrlicher Solar España CEO Francisco Espín, commented: "Chile is a priority country for us as I believe it has a great potential in the photovoltaic solar energy industry. Our acquired experience in Europe in the last 18 years, especially in Germany, Spain and Italy, will help us reach a higher efficiency and profitability in our future projects in this country and share this knowledge with the Federico Santa María Technical University. Among the last projects carried out almost worldwide the first photovoltaic roof at a football stadium in Latin America stands out. This system at Pituaçu stadium in Salvador (Brazil) has been recently connected to the grid."

On behalf of two funds managed by KGAL GmbH & Co. KG, the photovoltaics company is building a ground-mounted system generating a total power of 35 MW on the premises of the former military airport at Perleberg in Brandenburg.

Perleberg / Munich On Tuesday, April 10, 2012, Gehrlicher Solar AG began construction of the Perleberg Airport solar park. After the complex undertaking of removing munitions from the converted location, all areas were finally approved for construction. Now that this final hurdle has been cleared, there is nothing standing in the way of rapid progress in construction. With 35 megawatt of nominal power, the solar power system is projected to generate about 33 million kilowatt hours of green electricity on a yearly basis, an amount sufficient to cover the needs of around 9,300 three-person households.

The park was sold to two investment funds of KGAL GmbH & Co. KG located in Grünwald near Munich specializing in renewable energies: InfraClass Energie 6, a closed-end fund open to the general public purchased the western part, while the eastern part was acquired by the European Sustainable Power Fund 2 for institutional investors.

The solar park is built on a total of 87 hectares encompassing the previous military airport of Perleberg in Brandenburg, halfway between Hamburg and Berlin. For a short period, the success of the project was called into question as the federal government's plans to cut down feed in tariffs (FIT) for solar power systems caused a state of uncertainty. Thanks to the political support from the Perleberg region, the Federal State of Bavaria and Berlin, which was guided by a long-term view, it was possible to work out an appropriate transition period for ground-mounted projects on conversion areas and thereby the realization of this solar park. In the weeks to come, Gehrlicher Solar will build up 62 hectares of this area with substructures, solar modules, and inverters. The rest of the area will serve as what is called compensation area used to create habitats for meadow-breeding birds. Commissioning of the solar park is planned for June 2012. Compared to energy generated from fossil fuels, the plant will save approximately 32,000 tons of CO2 yearly.

This unique project, which has been developed due to the initiative of the electricity board of the state of Bahia (COELBA) and the government of that state, is the first photovoltaic system implanted in a football stadium in South America. Salvador de Bahia, Brazil.
Gehrlicher Ecoluz Solar do Brasil S.A., Joint Venture formed by Gehrlicher Solar AG and the Brazilian company Ecoluz Participacoes S.A., has completed the construction and commissioning of the photovoltaic plant of 5,560 sqm. extension of Pituaçu football stadium in Salvador de Bahia, at the end of March, connecting it to the grid on Saturday, 24th March.
In August 2011, Gehrlicher Ecoluz Solar do Brasil S.A, was awarded an international tender by the Brazilian utility Coelba (belonging to Neoenergia Group). The contract included planning and construction of the first photovoltaic system on a soccer stadium in Latin America. The plant, with a total capacity of 408 kWp, integrates two different module technologies: PVL modules of 144, thin, flexible and very light manufactured by United Solar Ovonic (Uni-Solar), amounting to a power of 238 kWp and which have been installed on the roof of the stadium and monocrystalline modules manufactured by Yingli Solar YL265, with an output of 170 kWp and installed in the locker room and parking canopies, which was built under the guidance of a design and engineering team of Gehrlicher Solar. Some of the energy produced will be used for own consumption of the stadium.
The involvement of Coelba and the State Government of Bahia, owner of the stadium and the photovoltaic plant, has been the key to the success of the project. "Pituaçu should be an example of how solar power works and the growth potential of this technology in a country like Brazil," says Ana Mascarenhas, energy efficiency advisor of Neoenergia Group.
"The photovoltaic plant of Pituaçu Stadium is a landmark in the development of the photovoltaic market in Brazil and from now on, many other facilities will be made based on their concept”, declares David Ricardo da Silva, CEO of Gehrlicher Ecoluz Solar do Brazil.

This project marks a historic breakthrough in the field of photovoltaic energy, since all the energy produced will compete in the Electricity Market equal to conventional energies and therefore a considerable potential for the PV market

Merida, Spain. The Prime Minister of Extremadura, Jose Antonio Monago, and the CEO of Gehrlicher Solar España, Guillermo Barea, met yesterday in the Presidency of the Government of Extremadura, Merida, for signing the agreement to allow the installation of 250 MW in the municipality of Talavan, one of the highest solar radiation in Europe. Gehrlicher Solar is working over a year and a half to realice this project that has the total availability of land, the access point and the technical feasibility report by "Red Eléctrica".

Gehrlicher Solar hopes to develop the project in about three years and start its construction in the second half of 2013. The plant will cover an extent of 750 hectares and will involve an investment estimated at 250 million euros, creating over 2000 jobs, direct and indirect (400 jobs per year on average). The generation of electricity is estimated at 400,000 MWH / year and will allow the plant to supply clean energy to 100.000 households and more than 100.00 and a saving of about 356,000 tones of CO2.

The Prime Minister of Extremadura, Jose Antonio Monago has valued this Project as a "bet" of an executive Extremadura "unequaled to renewable energies, in which the" longstanding commitment to the environment is proved". Besides, Monago said that Extremadura is the "ideal scenario for this project, being" a land desirable for entrepreneurial companies ". Therefore the Autonomous Community" is open to anyone who wants to rebuild the future of the region".

Guillermo Barea declared "I want to convey to the entire PV industry, not only in Spain but also in Europe, a message of optimism and that the sector can be competitive in the Electricity Market without subsidies. The Government support of Extremadura, our strategic capacity and the effort of my team are pushing this project to be viable in economic, technical and environmental issues. We must join forces to place again our country in a leading position in the global PV industry.

Ichtershausen/Dornach near Munich, 21. February 2012 – The 5.7 m² large thin-film solar...

Ichtershausen/Dornach near Munich, 21. February 2012 – The 5.7 m² large thin-film solar modules from Masdar PV gleam in the sunshine with a slightly reddish hue. In this showpiece project, Gehrlicher Solar, in the role of system integrator, working together with Masdar PV, has demonstrated the versatility of full-size modules. The innovative installation in Belgium was recently hooked up to the power grid for the French customer InnoVent. The 7.7 kWp roof-top installation is the second of its kind with modules of this size as roof elements.

This is the continuation of the successful cooperation between Gehrlicher Solar and Masdar PV. The project entailed challenging requirements in terms of innovative and engineering abilities, as did their first cooperative project. The building on which the thin-skin solar modules were to be mounted was an old barn built back in the late 19th century. The structure’s age and its sloping roof made it necessary to use a special sub-construction for the modules. The experts from Gehrlicher had the right solution to hand though: the GehrTec Intra substructure allowed Masdar PV’s solar modules to be fully integrated into the roof and thus create a completely rain-proof roof system.

Since the substructure required only a few system components and the a-Si solar modules offer an excellent cost-benefit ratio, the system’s total costs are such as to render it very attractive to investors. “We are proud to have carried out this project with Gehrlicher Solar”, said Dr. Matthias Peschke, COO of Masdar PV, adding: “Following our joint pilot project for a façade-integrated system in Munich, we have once again been able to offer our customer an innovative and aesthetically appealing solution.” Klaus Gehrlicher, CEO of Gehrlicher Solar, is also very pleased with the latest joint effort: “By using our well-tested substructure in combination with the full-size modules from Masdar PV, we can offer our customers solutions that are even more economical.”

For InnoVent, the project planner, this example of cooperation with Gehrlicher Solar and Masdar PV represents the prelude to a good business relationship. The highly innovative company, whose achievements include that of building one of the first wind farms in France, is also developing projects based on solar and wind energy in southern Africa. Products from Masdar PV are currently being used there as well.

The project located in Pereruela (Zamora) is Gehrlicher Solar’s biggest photovoltaic plant in Spain.

Madrid, Spain. Last December, Gehrlicher Solar completed the construction and commissioning of Pereruela Solar Park, the second connected installation in the province of Zamora, which means a total of 14 MW installed in this region. In February, the company will hand the plant over to the investor European Solar Power Funds 1 GmbH & Co. KG, a German investment fund specializing in photovoltaic projects, managed by KGAL GmbH & Co. KG with headquarters in Grünwald near Munich.

The ground-mounted photovoltaic installation will produce around 15.000.000 kWh of power per year, equivalent to the yearly power needs of 3.960 households and to a yearly saving of around 5,000 CO2 tons. The solar park occupies a total area of 37.6 hectares of free ground, of which 27.8 correspond to the photovoltaic installation. 122.584 First Solar modules and 14 SMA inverters have been installed.

Gehrlicher Solar has been responsible for the integral execution of this project including designing, managing, construction, and operation and maintenance. The project increases the total power operated and maintained by Gehrlicher in Spain to over 40 MW, positioning the firm in this country at a high level in this business segment.

Guillermo Barea, CEO of Gehrlicher Solar España, stated: “This project has been a great challenge for us, as it has successfully overcome several technical, administrative and environmental obstacles in a record time of 17 weeks. The last announcement from the Spanish government will worsen the situation of the Spanish PV industry. The Gehrlicher team has anticipated possible changes of the legal framework and made efforts to develop new markets. We will keep on working hard and face the new market framework as an opportunity. Pereruela Solar Park has created a strong basis in our relationship with KGAL, with whom we hope to realize further projects in other markets soon.”

Dr. Klaus Wolf, Managing Director of KGAL: “We are delighted that Pereruela Solar Park, our 13th photovoltaic project in Spain, is now online. The various funds managed by KGAL in Spain now operate power plants with a total capacity of around 76 MW. This was the first time we had worked with our partner Gehrlicher Solar España and they did an excellent job under conditions that weren’t exactly easy. We look forward to working with them again on other interesting projects on various European markets.”
